South Korea has said that more than 1,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed and wounded in Russia’s war with Ukraine.
Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Pyongyang was also preparing to deploy additional troops to help Russia’s war effort.
Seoul’s intelligence agency said in a report to members of parliament last week that at least 100 North Korean soldiers had been killed since entering the war in December.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that “we have assessed, based on various information and intelligence, that North Korean soldiers who recently engaged in fighting with Ukrainian forces have suffered about 1,100 casualties.”
Seoul, Washington and Kiev say North Korea has about 12,000 troops in Russia. Intelligence suggests that nuclear-armed North Korea is “developing and supplying self-destructive drones” to Russia to further aid Moscow in its fight against Ukraine.
North Korea and Russia have strengthened their military ties since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. A historic defense treaty signed between Pyongyang and Moscow in June took effect this month.
Experts say North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is keen to acquire advanced technology from Russia and to give his troops combat experience.
