A team of 11 Supreme Court lawyers participated in the bail hearing on behalf of former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari at the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court at around 10:15 am.
Chinmoy was not produced in court today. The bail hearing was held in the virtual presence of the accused in the presence of his lawyer in the court. Extensive measures were taken to ensure security in the court area since the morning around the hearing.
Assistant PP of the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Md. Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said that a hearing was held. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail application.
President of the Chittagong District Bar Association Nazim Uddin Chowdhury told reporters that the state party objected to the bail hearing and said that this is a sedition case, the maximum sentence for which is life imprisonment. On October 25 last year, a large rally of the Sanatani community was held in Chittagong under the leadership of Chinmoy Krishna Das. A few days later, a sedition case was filed against him on October 31 on charges of insulting the national flag. 18 more people were accused in this case.
On November 22, another large rally was held in Rangpur under the leadership of Chinmoy. Chinmoy Krishna Das was then arrested at the Dhaka airport on November 25 in the sedition case. The next day, when he applied for bail, the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate rejected it and ordered him to be sent to prison.
When the court ordered Chinmoy to be sent to jail, a clash broke out between law enforcement and lawyers and Chinmoy’s followers in Tattagram. At that time, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death outside the court premises.
When Chinmoy Das’ bail was not granted in the magistrate’s court on November 26, an application was filed in the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on the same day. The hearing of the application was held on December 3. But no lawyer was present in the court on behalf of Chinmoy that day. In addition, the state party also requested time for the hearing. In view of these, the court fixed January 2, 2025 for the bail hearing.
