He plans to remove fact-checkers from Facebook, Instagram and Threads and show users more political content. Zuckerberg outlined the change in a recently released video message. The Guardian reports.

Zuckerberg said that the main purpose of this change is to give the highest priority to free speech. However, some experts believe that there may be political motives behind the decision, especially with President Donald Trump on the eve of his second term in office. According to the new policy, Meta platforms will replace fact-checkers with community notes based on user opinions, similar to the Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter) platform.

Regarding the removal of fact-checkers, Zuckerberg said, “Fact-checkers are often biased and their activities have damaged credibility rather than built it.” He admitted that the new policy will allow Meta platforms to identify fewer “bad content” than before. However, there are plans to allow more freedom in the discussion of sensitive issues such as immigration and gender.

The introduction of Community Notes will give more weight to user feedback on controversial posts. Like Elon Musk, Zuckerberg sees this moderation system as one of the tools for free speech. However, according to analysts, the change will redefine the role of platforms in mainstream politics and social issues.

Meta-owned Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp platforms have more than 3 billion active users worldwide. Zuckerberg’s new policy will give these users new opportunities for free speech, but it could also create controversy.
