After approval from the Advisory Council meeting, all products related to e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have been included in the list of products banned from import. The Ministry of Commerce announced this information on Tuesday (January 7).
It said that the Ministry of Commerce issued an order on December 31 amending the Ministry of Commerce’s ‘Import Policy Order, 2021-24’ to include e-cigarettes in the list of goods prohibited from import. And it was published in the gazette on January 1 this year.
Earlier, on December 12, the proposal to ban the import of e-cigarettes was approved in the meeting of the Advisory Council. Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting.
At that time, a press release from the Cabinet Division after the meeting said that the Healthcare Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had raised this proposal. This step has been taken to ban the import of all products related to e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) to protect public health and keep future generations safe.
The Bangladesh Electronic Nicotine Delivery System Traders Association (BENDSTA) said that there are currently 500,000 e-cigarette customers in the country.
It is worth noting that the results of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review showed that toxic and carcinogenic chemicals were found in some of the 18 different e-cigarettes. Carcinogens are cancer-causing substances.
