What is behind the new civil war in Syria?

Reversal News Desk,

A new conflict has started in Syria. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the rebels had advanced after capturing Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city.

Now the question arises why the civil war started again in the country. The German press Deutsche Welle reported that at one time a militant organization called HTS was part of Al Qaeda. They are the ones who have started fighting against the Assad government.

Hayat Tahirir al-Sham, abbreviated as HTS. The Turkish-backed group has declared a virtual war against the Syrian government over the past week. Several other small Islamic organizations have joined them. But HTS is leading.

Last Friday, they captured Syria’s second-largest city, Aleppo. Several surrounding villages are now in their possession. Their next goal is to capture the city of Hama.

Nanar Hawach has been working on the Syrian war situation for a long time. He is also working on how to end the civil war. Nanar told DW that Bashar Assad’s government sent a large army to the city of Hama on Sunday. They were able to pressure HTS and push it back a little to the north. But Nanar fears that HTS will not stop there. The researcher fears another full-scale civil war across Syria in the next few weeks or months.

He said that since Turkey is behind HTS, they will continue to fight against the Assad government with sufficient strength.

Hama had previously become one of the centers of the civil war. In 2011, pro-democracy groups fought against the government in Syria. Initially, they were able to make some progress. But in 2015, the Assad government deployed a large number of troops in Hama. A fierce civil war began. The Assad government was able to suppress the rebels. At that time, Iran and Russia helped the Assad government in every way. They are still friends of the Assad government.

HTS was once part of Al Qaeda. Later, they separated. In 2018, the United States designated this organization as a terrorist organization. The northeastern region of Syria, especially the Idlib area, is now under the control of HTS. At least 4 million refugees have taken refuge in Idlib from different parts of Syria. Some believe that HTS is also trying to use them.

However, HTS is not the only one fighting against the Assad government. A section of the Syrian National Army (SNA), which is backed by Turkey, has also joined the fight, launching attacks on Kurdish-dominated areas in northeastern Syria.

Turkey has always been opposed to the Assad government. They have a large border with Syria. However, Turkey considers the Kurdish fighters as a terrorist organization in addition to the Assad government. And Turkey has been fighting against them for a long time.Russia has always been a friend of the Assad government. One of the reasons for this friendship is strategic advantages. Even if Russia is in some trouble due to the war in Ukraine, they will not give up Syria’s strategic position.

In fact, after the new civil war situation was created in Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Syria has always been our ally. In this case too, we will help the Assad government in every way. One of our goals is to restore the status quo in Syria. The Iranian government is also a supporter of the Assad government. The Assad government is part of the ‘Axis of Resistance’. This group considers the United States and Israel to be its main enemies. This group includes Iran, several countries including Lebanon, and several rebel groups such as the Houthis.

Some Syrian groups have claimed that about 200 armed men entered Syria from Iran in pickup trucks on Monday. They will assist the Syrian army near Aleppo. All in all, Syria is facing a new civil war.

The country’s economy and social system have practically collapsed due to the civil war that has been going on since 2011. On top of that, this new fight will push the country into an even more dangerous situation.
