Bangladesh started the ODI series with a loss. In the first of the three-match series, Sherfan Rutherford’s century helped West Indies defeat the Tigers by 5 runs. With this victory, the Caribbeans took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Tigers captain Miraj won the toss and elected to bat at Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts on Sunday (December 8). Tanjid Hasan Tamim, Miraj and Mahmudullah Riyad scored fifties as Bangladesh posted 294 for 6 in 50 overs. Tanjid Tamim scored 60 off 60 balls, Miraj scored 74 off 101 balls and Mahmudullah scored 55 off 44 balls. Romario Shepherd took 3 wickets for the West Indies.
Batting at a target of 295, the Caribbeans did not get off to a good start. They lost two wickets for their team’s 27 runs. Brandon King was dismissed for 9 and Evin Lewis for 16 runs. Then Shai Hope along with Kasi Karthi dealt with the initial blow. These two batsmen put on a 67-run partnership.
However, Karthi was dismissed for 21 runs off 37 balls for the team’s 94 runs. After his departure, Hope kept the run wheel moving along with Rutherford. Rutherford continued to bat aggressively. Both of them picked up fifties.
Hope was dismissed for 86 off 88 balls in the team’s 193. However, Rutherford, batting hard, brought up a century off 77 balls. He scored 113 off 80 balls before being dismissed. Justin Graves’ unbeaten 41 helped West Indies win with 14 balls in hand.
