Reversal News Desk,
President Emmanuel Macron has named centrist leader Francois Bayrou as France’s new prime minister, seeking to end months of political turmoil.
The ouster of Prime Minister Michel Barnier in a no-confidence vote in parliament on December 4 has plunged France into a new crisis. Macron’s main task now is to ensure that the new Prime Minister Bayrou stays in power for a long time.
Michel Barnier lasted only three months in office. MPs ousted him nine days ago.
President Macron is halfway through his term. His appointee, François Bayrou, will be his fourth prime minister this year.
Bayrou, a Macron ally and mayor of the southwestern region of the country and leader of the Modem party, held two hours of talks before his name was announced as the new prime minister, the BBC reported.
The final decision came after talks with Macron at the Elysee Palace. Macron was expected to announce the name of the new prime minister on Thursday. But he later postponed it and announced the name on Friday.
At a time when 53 percent of people in France wanted the collapse of soccer due to anger over the proposed budget, former Prime Minister Michel Barnier used special powers to get his budget bill passed in parliament without a vote by MPs.
By doing so, Barnier risked his government facing a vote of no confidence and ultimately lost power. The new prime minister will now face the immediate challenge of producing a budget that can be passed by parliament.
