US President Joe Biden has canceled a trip to Italy as wildfires rage in Los Angeles. Biden was scheduled to visit Italy from Thursday to Saturday as part of his final foreign trip as president.
White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said in a statement on Wednesday (January 8). Biden was scheduled to meet with Pope Francis in Rome.
Karin Jean-Pierre said Biden made the decision after returning to Washington this morning after meeting with various law enforcement agencies, firefighters and emergency workers in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, the rapidly spreading wildfires in Los Angeles have already gotten out of control. The fires have burned a large area.
According to a report by Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera, five people have been reported dead so far. More than 1,000 homes have been burned.
